There’s this superstition that one shouldn’t wear necklaces while pregnant. They say that a woman should not wear necklace during pregnancy because it causes the baby’s umbilical cord to be wrapped around his or her neck. Is there a reason to believe in that?
My Own Experience During Pregnancy
Someone gave me that advice when I was pregnant. I didn’t believe it but just to be on the safe side, I avoided wearing necklaces – for a while. When my husband gave me a necklace as a gift midway through my pregnancy, I used it almost everyday.
When I gave birth, we originally intended it to be via the normal delivery. However, the doctor noticed that whenever I tried to push, the baby’s heart beat would drop. She tried vacuuming her out but finally decided for an emergency Cesarean (C-section) operation. That’s when we found out that my baby’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.
Other Moms’ Experiences Wearing Necklaces While Pregnant
I have read other testimonies from mothers having similar experiences. On the other hand, there are also others who said they never had problems with their pregnancy even if they were wearing necklaces.
Nuchal Cord
When a baby’s umbilical cord is wrapped around his or her neck, doctors and medical professionals refer to it as nuchal cord. It actually happens in about 37% of pregnancies and is considered quite common.
Conclusion: Can You Wear Necklaces While Pregnant?
Medical professionals claim that there are many factors that may cause nuchal cord but it is never caused by wearing necklaces when pregnant or anything a mother has worn or done. Since nuchal cords are very common, there might be a possibility that this superstition became popular because some women who wore necklaces during pregnancy attributed nuchal cords to them having used necklaces during pregnancy.
If you have worries about your pregnancy, it is always a good idea to ask your doctor about it to allay your fears. In this day and age, it’s relatively safer for women to give birth. Our medical technology is way more advanced. If ever there will be complications, doctors can perform tests to easily be detect them.
Personally, do you believe in this superstition? Are you a necklace wearing mom-to-be who didn’t have problems with nuchal cord? Or did you not wear necklaces while pregnant but your baby ended up with an umbilical cord wrapped around his or her neck? Many say this is a silly superstition but just follow it to be on the safe side; are you one of them? We’d love to hear you share your experiences to refute or support this belief.

I don’t think wearing a necklace had anything to do with the umbilical cord tight around the baby’s neck, it’s just a superstition.
Gee says
thanks josie. 🙂

I don’t believe in such superstitions 🙂 back when I was pregnant, I am wearing two necklaces, one gold and the other one silver. Both were given by a good friend of mine so I use it all the time, well, I deliver the baby normally with no problems.
