An “honest mistake” folks, but for a while I thought Philippines was in a state of war, too. Take a look at this photo from the website of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) in the Philippines to see what I mean.
One of the unique characteristics of the Philippine flag is the symbolism of how it is displayed. In times of peace, the color on top must be blue while in times of war, it is red. The flag behind President Benigno Aquino III was incorrectly displayed and depicted that the Philippines is at war.
Well, President Aquino (in case you still don’t know him, he’s seated in the left-hand side of President Obama in the picture above) didn’t seem to notice the error when the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations met President Obama in Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York last Friday.
U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Rebecca Thompson said that it was an honest mistake and added that “the U.S. treasures its close relationship and close partnership with the Philippines.”

oo nga noh? i didn’t even noticed that
Gee says
it’s ok. even PNoy didn’t notice. and he’s sitting just beside it. 😀
Eihdra says
Gosh, wasn’t able to watch that. I hope the discussion wasn’t about going to war with other countries! (:
Gee says

I saw that on Noynoy’s FB and a friend from Plurk posted that, too. I was like, what the hell?!? I’m not a sensitive Pinoy, but, displaying our flag like that is just disrespectful. And, P-Noy didn’t even notice that. None of his staff saw that or they just didn’t react?! Sheesh. What a dumb a$$. If it was China’s flag or Japanese flag (in case they had something different) that was displayed wrong, for sure, they would react and have it changed ASAP. Tsk tsk.
Gee says
obviously, the one who set that up was unaware of the flag’s symbolism. what a boo-booo. hehe.

Ayy oo nga…parang disrespect sa Philippines hehehe..pero sabi naman eh it was an honest mistake..
Gee says
oo nga. kaya lang sana inayos pa rin nila.

I explained this to hubs, sabi nya kasi ano daw dapat ang position ng flag ng Pinas hehehe.. Then sabi nya, pinapatunayan lang daw na alang alam yung nagdisplay hehehe.
Gee says
it’s one of the unique characteristics of the Philippine flag kasi. don’t worry, if some pinoys don’t even know it, it’s understandable if foreigners do not know it too. 😀
Feron says
It’s not an honest mistake but a biggy or that there is indeed an ongoing war in Pinas between “jueteng lords” and the government who seems don’t know what to do with it!
Oh, my Philippines!:=)
Gee says
the war againsts jueteng lords will be an unending war and if that will be the basis, then the Philippine flag will always have the red color on top. 😀

Wow i did not know this about the Philippines flag . I really appreciate the information here. I am going to have to ask my wife if she knew this since she is filipino.
Gee says
it is. when shown vertically, the blue must be on the right side of the flag to signify that it’s a time of peace (if you’re facing it, the blue must be on your left side). I had an acronym for this before so that I won’t forget it: BURP which means that
Blue should be on the flag’s Upper or Right part during times of Peace.
