I’m doing a quick survey, care to indulge me? Would you prefer seeing the whole post immediately upon arriving a blog or would you rather click the “Read More” link after being thrilled by the post excerpt?
I had noticed that my average posts are more than 400 words long and when published, it takes up a lot of space in my home page. I don’t know if such turns off readers.
In my first blog, I had published post excerpts then had a “Read More” link that readers must click to read the whole post. It helped increase the blog’s page views but it became a big problem when that blog was disabled by Blogger because I wasn’t able to back-up the blog posts. When I tried accessing the cached pages of the posts via Google and other search engines, I only have the front page in the cached page and when I tried to click the “Read More” link, I already reached the “blog not found” page. From that moment on, I vowed not to use “Read More” links on my posts.
How about you? Do you often post your article in whole or you prefer engaging your readers’ interest via an excerpt then make them click the “Read More” link to access the rest of the story? Which one do you prefer?

I hate to click the read more button, so I opt for see all.
Dave Lucas says
DITTO @Emila ! It’s far better to “See All” – and if you post an unusually LONG article, you could then give it a unique page (use a “teaser” on your home page!)

I used that before but all my visitors complained. lol. So I just use it if I have one long post but in a different wording like “see all”.

I’d prefer not to click the โRead Moreโ link! ๐

For me, especially for blogs/site using the magazine layout the “Read More” link is an ordinary thing. Maybe it depends on the topic…
Read More friends… haha, have a nice day all of us!:=)
kat says
I would only click “read more” link if my internet connection is fast and the topic is interesting.

I prefer see all. ๐

I prefer to see the read more or whatever is said, or if possible magazine style (teasers) layout i can then see other posts at a glance and tend to read more posts if you get what i mean lol.

I hate clicking the “read more” link but then I sometimes when I visit blogs that have “read more” I end up staying longer because I see more posts and some I find interesting, then I get to read more posts.
Vera says
I personally prefer to publish the post in full, but for archived posts, a read more link would be okay.
awalkthroughlife says
either is fine with me. with “read more”, though, a post has to be interesting enough to compel the reader to finish the post by clicking the “read more” option or words to that effect.
Eihdra says
For me, read more if it’s a long post, so as not to kinda make the homepage crowded.. See all if it’s just a quick post or short one. Don’t wanna make them click “read more” when there’s just a couple of sentences left from what they’ve already read prior to clicking..
blankPixels says
On my blog, Just Another Pixel, I use both. Default is viewers will see the whole post. But, if it’s a VERY long post, I use the MORE tag, especially when there are tons of photos. That way, my main page won’t take too long to load. I usually just indicate “more photos after the jump” so those who are interested to see more contents or photos would click on it.
It really depends on the niche/theme of the blog. I’m okay with both. Just make sure that if you choose to use excerpts on your main page that the teaser would really draw your readers to click for more.
I prefer to have full control over the excerpt so I just use the <!–more–> tag.
Raven says
Both would be preferable!
The two styles of how you are going to show your posts depends on your blog’s layout, niche and your blog’s audience.
Consider this:
A blog for blog tricks or tips will usually have an audience that would only like to read specific posts, just like “how to remove the blogger navbar” or “Best wordpress plugins” etc. or articles that they have the passion to read, thus it would be great if you would use truncated posts/teasers or with the “read more” link for posts.
But a Diary or journal blog would usually have readers that are interested to that blogger’s life and therefore a long and full view posts would be preferable.

i prefer see all, gee! why? because i have a slow internet connection. with see all, I only have to wait twice; page and comment. with read more, i have to wait thrice, page, blog post and comment. when i intend to comment, i leave the blog open while blog hopping and come back to the blog to comment when I’m done dropping. so i am hoping you would not change it to read more as it takes forever for the page to load ๐
elai says
on second thought, parang same lng no? hahaha. read more also loads twice. but i still prefer see all. hehehe
Pearl says
I’d like to see all on one page… but sometimes when the content is very interesting, I also click on the “read more” to finish reading the entire post. So, i think it still depends on the content….
Lhen says
i prefer see all, nkakatamad na mag read more eh. minsan nag ne network error pa…
