The number one reason for failure, accounting for almost half the cars that do not pass the initial test, is lighting. This can involve any light on the vehicle, and it need not be out to fail. If the bulb is the wrong color, as in the case of indicators that are not orange enough, the inspector will fail the car.
The second most common problem area, involved in a quarter of failures, is tires and wheels. These are often problems that should not occur at all, as when the tire on one end of the axle is different in size or structure from its mate. Improperly marked tires or worn or damaged ones also cause failure.
The third most common reason, causing twenty per cent of failures, is often the simplest to remedy. The driver’s view through the area swept by the wipers must be unobstructed. This means no navigation devices, air fresheners or anything else. Some inspectors may remove these before inspecting, but others will fail the car. Damage to the windscreen or missing or malfunctioning mirrors or wipers also trigger failure.
Taking care of these issues will go a long way toward making sure a well maintained car passes the test on it first appearance before north east MOT car services.
