Both my daughters became tech-savvy at a young age. Geshery already knows her way with the iPad at one and a half years old while Georyl’s already comfortable playing with the iPod at 10 months! A new toy that doesn’t involve technology is a nice change for them.
Last month, Thinkfun sent us the Move & Groove: Your Child’s First Dance Game for free in exchange for an honest review here at GEORYL. It is a simple game where you roll a large plush cube, pick a card that will correspond with the color that was rolled, and perform the dance move that is shown in the card. The game has 48 cards, divided into six categories/colors, namely:
- Yellow – let’s pretend
- Green – movement
- Blue – classics
- Gray – body parts
- Orange – silliness
- Purple – workout
According to Thinkfun, Move & Groove offers the following learning areas that parents can focus on:
- The basics of game play – learn to follow rules
- Movement, flexibility, balance and coordination – allows your child to move around the room and do some physical activities
- Self-awareness and spatial orientation
- Creativity and self-expression – there is no right or wrong movement, it is all up to the child’s interpretation and activity
- Language and communication
- Learning through movement – offers opportunity for great cognitive development
The manufacturers of the Move & Groove indicated that this game is for 18 months and up and would require two or more players. While it can indeed be a fun game for the whole family, I believe that 18 months is quite too early for a toddler to fully understand this game. There’s a need for a parent (or somebody who can read the instructions in the card) to be around in order for the little ones to play the game.
Georyl (4 years old) sure enjoyed dancing and doing the activities required by the cards but Geshery (18 months) is more interested in rolling the cube. Nevertheless, they both had fun while playing the game.
