When I was still in the Philippines, I took up weekend classes for my Master in Management course at another province. Every Saturday morning, I would wake up early and travel for about two and a half hours just to attend my classes. In the afternoon, I’d commute back home again after our five o’clock PM class. It was a tiresome routine but I don’t want to pay for a boarding house just for a weekend class. Besides, I was still young and single at that time so the hectic schedule and the bumpy ride to another province especially during the rainy seasons were somehow manageable.
Aside from the travel time and costs, one of the issues I had to face was incorporating my classroom activities into my routine. Meeting and coordinating with my group mates when we had some group assignments, presentations, reports and other group activities was really a problem. I had a regular 8 to 5 job during weekdays and I can’t meet them during the weekday group meetings. I remember spending a lot on phone bills for long distance calls and cell phone charges just to discuss school works with them.
Looking back, I wouldn’t have done it if I were already married – with kids. I can’t afford to waste a lot of time, energy and money on traveling. The rigid schedule of going to classes and studying will not fit into my busy lifestyle.
