My childhood memories on dental visits consist mainly of those times when I had some tooth extraction, filings and other major dental works that needed to be done on my teeth. Regular visits to the dentist, especially for cleanings, were not really considered as a priority.
Dental insurance that would cover the cost of dental work are unheard of in the Philippines so every visit to the dentist would mean paying for their fees in cash out of our own (or at that time, my parent’s) pockets. My parents were barely out of school when they started a family and understandably, at that time there were more pressing concerns that they had to prioritize, especially in terms of finances than paying for dentists. Insurance agencies are not so common and health care expenses usually comes out of pocket.
When we brought Georyl to the dentist here in Las Vegas, she already had some cavities. The dentist explained that even though they were only temporary teeth, they must still perform some dental procedures on her (some filling and I’m not sure if the term was “crown”) because cavities on milk teeth can affect the permanent teeth. Since Georyl doesn’t want to open her mouth at the dentist’s clinic, they had to put her to sleep while they perform the operation.
Here’s my little princess while we’re waiting for the operation to begin.

We were asked to leave while they were operating on her and after it, they transferred her to another room while they waited for her to wake up. When she woke up, she was crying because aside from that strange feeling that she has in her mouth, the room was full of unfamiliar faces. I wish they called us before she woke up, it would have helped ease her anxieties. Seeing her cry and those uncontrollable sobs were just heartbreaking.
Now, we’re trying to limit the amount of sweets that she’s taking. No sugar free gum, less chocolates and lots of tooth brushing. Coupled with regular dental check-ups, I hope she’ll have healthier and stronger teeth (especially the permanent ones).
Yeah, kev had 9 cavities at 4..what in tarnation?!?!lol….it really is hard seeing your kid crying when they’re scared of being left or something of that sort.
9 cavities? he’s still not complaining of toothache or something? they are still milk teeth and hopefully, the permanent ones will not be affected…
ay wawa naman bebe georyl…we visited dental clinic once pa lang as part of iris Heart Surgery clearance. I am glad that Iris has perfect teeth she is not really in to sweets, buti na lang. She gets a star in her hand pa from dentist kasi very good daw yung teeth.
