My mom loves gardening. While I was growing up and was still living with them, my mother and I would usually spend time taking care of her flower garden which, by the way, is such a remarkable sight with all those roses of various colors, paperwhite bulbs, tulips and other flowering plants. Looking back, I think that our mother-daughter special bonding moments during gardening time is probably the reason why I learned to love gardening as well.
My family and I are now based in Las Vegas – and I am sad to say that I cannot plant flowering plants as much as I can. Xeriscaping or xerogardening is the norm here because the city is geographically located in a desert and it is important to conserve water for domestic and community uses. Besides, I also cannot grow the plants that I wanted because the soil is so salty that experts say that it is even considered toxic to plants.
When my mom visited us last September (she’s here until now because I had some complications during pregnancy and she’s here to assist me), she taught me to create my own soil out of biodegradable materials using a compost box. Not only do I help the environment, we also were able to create our own soil. We started potting a few aloe vera and one poinsettia plant. Now, I am happy because I have my own collection of potted plants that I consider as my mini garden (with the help of mom’s green thumb of course, wink!).
Anyway, I am hoping that I could accumulate enough soil to allow me to have a flower garden in spring. That’s only less than two months to go (since the first day of spring this year 2013 is on March 20) so I just might have to double time or get another compost box.
Just in case I cannot create my own flowerbed, I will have to content myself with potted flowering plants. I probably would buy some potted daffodils, tulips and hyacinths.
