God Gave Us Christmas is a good book. I love the colorful illustrations by David Hohn. I agree with the message of the author, Lisa Tawn Bergren, that God is everywhere and I like the fact that the book mentions that Christmas was not invented by Santa and that God is more important than Santa.
However, I felt that this book was originally written as “God is Everywhere.” The efforts to relate all the forces in nature to Christ’s birth were a bit forced. For example, a chunk of ice that was cut away from the cliff and fell into the sea was explained by the Mommy bear to her cub as “That is God.” I cannot understand why the author said that because God’s all-powerful that “he can command water to freeze and glacier to melt,” he made Jesus King of all kings – and then relate it to Christmas.
It might be that I had different beliefs as to why God gave us Christmas or had expected a book that focused more on the nativity; maybe the author just wanted to make everything look simpler for a young child to understand the concept of Christmas but this book, for me, didn’t accomplish its purpose of proving why “Jesus is the best present of all.”
